How to choose a Wetsuit for your Child

Choosing a Children’s Wetsuit

pink childrens wetsuitChildren love water and so as a parent it is in your best interest to provide them something that makes them happy but does not compromise their safety. Having a wetsuit for your child is very important for their enjoyment and protection.

It is probably the best outdoor present you could give them. Children will definitely enjoy their beach activities more especially if they have their wetsuits on.

The question is, how do you buy the right wetsuits for your children?

Check for the fit: Remember that children’s wetsuits should be close fitting.  You can however get away with a slightly larger suit when the water temperature is warmer, so you may buy bigger in hope of lasting another year.

I would always recommend  wearing a rashvest under your wetsuit for added warmth and protection from salt rub.  When sea salt crystals dry they become sharp and abrasive. The neck is the prone area for this discomfort, the high collar on our smooth lycra rashvest helps prevent this.

Thermal rashvests are designed to be worn under your wetsuit. For extra heat retention a thermal rashvest is advisable,  the plush fleece has greater thermal properties which help to keep you warmer.

Once out of the water and playing on the beach many parents keep the rashvest on their child for added sun protection at UV50+ rated, in these bright colours they are easy to see and look like cool surfer dudes.

Wetsuits come in an array of colours, styles and sizes, so you should be aware of which wetsuit you should be buying.

Check for thickness. Thick wetsuits at the extreme end of their cold are usually made from 7mm thick neoprene. It offers much less exposure to protection on deeper depths. Others may come in 3mm suitable for summer and 5mm for winter exposure wetsuits.

Check for the warmth. It is an important factor as they will be surfing or playing in the water for quite a long period of time.

Check for the seams, seams connect the panels of wetsuits. Generally speaking, more panels mean better flexibility.
